Wild Horse is a loose shape, lushly instrumented with several helping hands but at times bare-boned with only a thin guitar line and a shaky voice. The group is a revolving collective of musicians and kindred spirits led by Brooklyn via Connecticut singer-songwriter Erik Emanuelson.

Wild Horse’s music is infused with that pungent New England feel–dried leaves and water tones swirling around the more mechanical beat of the city. The sound embodies a quiet, raw feel, best illustrated through Emanuelson’s voice; like a graveled road, its rough texture somehow feels natural, with clear direction. However the true power of Emanuelson’s delivery lies in the lyrical meat of each tune. His words turn the colors rich, turning the ostensibly mundane into full-bodied tales.

“Most of my songs are some kind of a projection of other people, with me sort of being a participant in the scene,” says Emanuelson.

Even with the weighty lines, the songs somehow manage to maintain a delicate demeanor, to keep a very simple appeal. Emanuelson’s songs reflect his Northeast upbringing, aurally filled with picturesque nooks and fields, painted with mute-tones. An earthy melody threads its way through the steady pace of acoustic guitar and time seems to slow down. Songs like ‘So’ carry on with warm electric guitar-plucked notes, falling lazily over one another, bedding Emanuelson’s open-hearted recall of a neighborhood’s interweaving. Similarly on the EP’s title track, themes of friendship gone awry and ominous images of scaling a storm-wrecked cemetery are contrasted by thick brushes of electric lead, jangly blots of piano chords, and lackadaisical background vocals.

Like the idea of Wild Horse, the product itself puts Emanuelson directly at the forefront, presenting unassuming, open-palmed candor for a listener to mull over in their own quiet. His music is honest and unassuming reminding us that there is nothing more free than ourselves, and no anchor so great as music.

Joshua Sanders

myspace.com/joshuasandersacoustic

Josh’s songwriting shows the influences of his two longtime heroes, Bruce Springsteen and Townes van Zandt, and he has recently been receiving radio airplay on Americana/country radio (WICR 88.7 in Indianapolis) as well as internet radio (Terry Ann McClean’s Bluegrass Mix). Though a native of New York City, he became corrupted driving cross country on his way to college in California when he heard local bands covering “Take me back to Tulsa, I’m too Young to Marry” and “Mama Don’t Let You Babies Grow up to be Cowboys”. A summer spent hanging out in Santa Barbara and listening to country bands covering Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash tunes at the now defunct Sportsman Bar sealed the deal.

Josh’s musical background is primarily in jazz, blues and bluegrass. He studied voice in Los Angeles with Susan Strietwieser and in New York with Janie Barnett; guitar in Los Angeles with Gary Mandell of Boulevard Music and in New York with Glenn Alexander and Matt Smith. He is currently studying with New York City guitar legend Robin Greenstein and performs regularly at small venues in and around NYC and the Hudson Valley. Mr. Sanders’ early band experience was primarily electric blues, which he found was tremendously helpful in terms of putting all those lessons to some kind of practical use, as well as figuring out how to work with the bass and drums to form a singular sound. Since 1999 he has attended several songwriting circles here in New York, with a goal, rarely achieved, of writing one song every week.

Reddi

Singer/songwriter Reddi combines acoustic rock with indie pop appeal. Her songwriting stems from a personal history of journals and poetry as well as everyday inspiration found in relationships, in her morning cup of coffee and on the subway to and from her Brooklyn apartment. The result is songs that are both unapologetically universal and unique.

Asher Weiss

http://asherweissmusic.bandcamp.com/
http://www.myspace.com/asherweissmusic

Asher Weiss grew up studying classical violin and listening to his dad’s ’60s folk collection. Sometime in high school, when he was immersed in the musical renaissance of the late ’80s/early ’90s, he began to strum a guitar. In college, he majored in religion. People would ask (in a tone ranging from puzzlement to disapproval), “A degree in religion!!? What can you do with that?” To which he would respond, “Play guitar, of course.”

Indeed, guitar had become his primary instrument, but he was not writing songs. Far from it. Instead, he had fallen in love with chord voicings and the harmonic possibilities that only jazz guitar could offer. The jazz education was valuable to be sure, but it took him far too long to realize that his future lay in songwriting, not in practicing scales and arpeggios eight hours a day.

Before dedicating himself to songwriting, Weiss played as a sideman in several NYC bands. Each one brought him closer to a songwriting role. When the last of these ended, he was out of options, so he decided to write his own songs. Singing followed.

Weiss’ first recording, “Bushwick to Boston,” is so named because its six songs were conceived on the road– the Chinatown Bus specifically– from Bushwick, Brooklyn, to Boston, Mass, over a six month period. The songs are folk-based, but are produced with a nod towards a number of other genres. Lyrically, according to one of his friends, they are best described as “songs about life.”

“I couldn’t tell you exactly when my love affair with music began but it was very early. Growing up my dad always had some jazz on the turntable and my room was right across from his so it would just float in, kind of the soundtrack to my childhood I guess. My grandma was a piano player and she had a beautiful touch. She always said I got her hands. I look like her too. There were the grade school piano lessons and the high school rock bands. We lost the Battle of the Bands three years straight. I was already in love with songwriting though so there was no going back. There were the dorm room and basement party singalongs in college and that’s when I started my first real band I suppose. We actually got gigs. My parents really weren’t too keen on the idea of me playing in a rock n roll band so of course I took it very seriously and it’s all I wanted to do. And basically still is.”

Bio:

Brooklyn-based musician, producer and writer Mike Errico has built his name on the strength of critically-acclaimed releases Pictures of the Big Vacation, Tonight I Drink You All, Skimming, All In and Songs from Lift. Errico’s rock-driven style showcases sharp lyrics and soaring vocals, whether fronting a band or playing in a solo acoustic setting.

Since his first major gig, a solo slot at Woodstock ’99, Errico has shared the stage with artists including Jonny Lang, Guster, Soulive, Bob Weir, Rusted Root, Dido, North Mississippi Allstars, Ari Hest, Longwave, Keller Williams, Jonatha Brooke, Dan Bern, Dar Williams and many others.

Errico has written dozens of TV theme songs, most notably VH1’s hit series Pop Up Video. He has contributed composition and performance to shows including Monday Night Football, MTV’s Band in a Bubble and It’s a Mall World, My Coolest Years [VH1], Maxim’s Swimsuit Issue DVD series, Blender magazine’s SXSW and Lollapalooza coverage and Peeping Toms and First Impressions [Comcast VOD]. Selections from his discography have been used in feature films including 2006’s Where We Are Now and 2007’s Puccini for Beginners.

Errico’s independent spirit, combined with his observations on the current state of music, inspired him to form Tallboy 7, the company that provides a home for his creative work. Mike Errico official site: www.errico.com
